Eagle-eyed players had hoped for a release date reveal on 20th April, the four-year anniversary of the previous God of War game's release, but that day has now been and gone without a date being confirmed by the developers.

However, the developers did say something to mark that anniversary, with Sony Santa Monica's Cory Barlog appearing in a video message from the company's official Twitter account.

Addressing God of War Rangarok in the video, Barlog said: "We haven't said a lot about this. That's because everybody is heads-down, hard at work. We are perfectionists. Everyone's tightening up the graphics on level three, there is so much going on right now that I just wish that we could share with you, but it's just not ready to be shown."

He added: "The moment, the very second that we have something that we're ready to share, we're going to share it, because we don't want to hold any of this back.

"So please hold tight, know that something cool is coming, and that we - everybody here at Santa Monica - is so incredibly thankful for all the support you've given us."

Between all the God of War Ragnarok hype and the recent trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder (not to mention the Assassin's Creed Valhalla Ragnarok DLC), it's certainly a good time to be a fictional version of godly being with a penchant for heavy-hitting action.

As soon as we learn more about God of War Ragnarok, we'll be sure to update this page. Until then, you can check out all the essential details below.

When is the God of War Ragnarok release date?

The God of War Ragnarok release date will occur in 2022, the developers have confirmed.

Despite some people starting to predict that the game could be delayed into 2023, the official God of War Ragnarok page on the PlayStation website still says "release date: 2022".

A precise date has not been confirmed yet, nor has a month to aim for, but we would expect this game to drop in the second half of the year. It would make a great game for the Christmas break, after all.

Rumours on Twitter have suggested that 30th September 2022 could end up being the God of War Ragnarok release date, but we'll be sure to let you know if that date - or any other one - gets confirmed by an official source. Watch this space.

Is God of War Ragnarok on PS4 or PS5?

Sony's Hermen Hulst, the Head of PlayStation Studios, revealed in a blog post that God of War Ragnarok will release on both PS4 and PS5. This may come as a surprise, considering that many believed this would be a PS5 exclusive.

Hulst said: "Where it makes sense to develop a title for both PS4 and PS5 – for Horizon Forbidden West, the next God of War, GT7 – we’ll continue looking at that. And if PS4 owners want to play that game, then they can. If they want to go on and play the PS5 version, that game will be there for them."

Can I pre-order God of War Ragnarok?

Pre-orders have not yet begun for God of War Ragnarok. The game is eyeing a release in 2022, but you can't order your copy just yet.

Of course, only time will tell if this goes down in history as one of the best PS5 games, but Sony fans will want to get their order in nice and early. We'll let you know when pre-orders open. We could learn more at Sony's next State of Play event.

What is the God of War Ragnarok story?

Sony is keeping its cards close to its chest when it comes to God of War Ragnarok's story, but we do know a few things about the game's narrative direction.

For one thing, a showdown between Kratos and Thor was teased at the end of the last game, and we also learned that Atreus' original name was Loki. With those two nuggets of information in mind, we can expect big mysteries to unfold in the game and for more morsels of Norse mythology to factor in this next release.

Expect more detailed information to start being released over the coming months as the promotional campaign really kicks off, but we are eager to learn as much as we can about the much-anticipated sequel.

Is there a trailer for God of War Ragnarok?

Revealed to the delight of many at the PlayStation Showcase event last year, here's the first teaser trailer for God Of War Ragnarok. While you wait for that God of War Ragnarok release date to be confirmed, check this out.
